Move To Las Vegas
| Considering moving to Vegas | Author: mkaiser Date: 8-16-09 10:30 am
My husband and I currently live in IL. We are considering moving to Las Vegas to make a new start for our family. We have 2 kids (3 years old and 3 months old). Our daughter was born with a few birth defects and has already had 2 surgeries and will be having 2 more by the end of the year. If we decide to move then it would more than likely be at the beginning of the year next year unless we are offered jobs out there earliest that we can not pass up and we can find good Dr's to do out daughters surgeries.
So now for my questions: Do you think Vegas is a good town to raise a family? My husband has told me several times that the schools in Vegas are the best in the country do you know how the schools are out there? We are very concerned about education and want to make sure that both kids have the best opportunities that they can have. How is the job market out there? My husband is in law enforcement and I currently work for a credit union. My husband would like to stay in the same field however I am open to other career opportunities. Is it hard to get used to the weather? As like all big cities there are areas that you want to stay away from, what are those cities/areas?
Any other advise would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your post.

For me, I could never live in Las Vegas though I love to go there for vacations.
I find it very, very dry and I prefer a wetter climate. Can be really dusty and windy, not good for asthma sufferers.
I think it is one of the hottest places in the summer and I can't stand hot for long.
In some places traffic and road construction is never-ending, or so it seems.

Las Vegas is NOT a good place to raise your kids. trust me, I know.
The school district is horrible, the crime is high, there is homeless people everywhere. Not to mention the pedophiles. I know it seems promising, but unless you're a local with good job experience, you most likely won't get hired anywhere. Well, unless you have connections. But I'd consider you do some research on Vegas, you may find that you like it?
The only thing Vegas has going for it, is eh, Nice Parks?
This is my opinion based on living here for the past few years. If someone were born here and said it was a good place to live, it's understandable seeing they have been around this place since they were babies. But getting used to this place is equivalent to hell.
Keep Vegas for vacations, it's nicer that way. Also, it's getting overpopulated here anyway, schools are PACKED, and houses are being foreclosed all over the valley. Either wait a few years until things clear up, or find a nicer place to move.
Best Regards,
Nico.

Are you serious? You and your husband both have decent jobs and you are considering giving them up to move to Las Vegas? Have you not heard how bad it is economically?
I am confused why you would mention your childs birth defects.
I am also confused about this thread....is it for real?

In order.....
It can be a fine place to raise your kids if you are intelligent parents.
The school district does have problems, but for parents that take an active role in their kid's education, you'd make it okay.
Yes, crime is high.
Homeless are not everywhere. lordy lol There is a homeless problem though.
What about pedophiles?? Is Las Vegas the only community ion America that has them?
Unemployment is about 13.4% here. No way would I consider moving to a place with higher than the US average.
Vegas has much more going for it than the parks.
Why did you pick LV as a choice to relocate to?? Unless you have secure jobs lined up, it would be very risky to relocate here due to the unemployment rate.
p.s. Nico, why did you move here? Sounds like you did not fully research.

Thats what I think Chipper , if you are a good parent this is a great place to raise a kid.My siblings and I grew up here and we are all good people, my kids grew up here and they are great kids. My kids were never allowed on the strip as children, except for the few times we took them to Circus Circus. Out side of the strip its as normal here as any other city. The schools being built are catching up to the growth now too. The unemployment rate is mostly construction workers out of work. Las Vegas is a great city !! Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

Rhonda:
Just wondering: Is there a bank you prefer working with in Vegas? I have some history with Citibank. Also, do they all ask for 20 percent down payment on condos and houses?
Thanks.
