I thought about moving to Vegas for years but after spending 3 months there, decided it is just a nice place to visit.

It's all in what you like and what you make of it. Outside of the road construction and traffic, I find that Las Vegas life agrees with me. I concentrate on things that I can't do anywhere else, like finding gambling exploits and inexpensive food deals. I fell into a circle of friends who were really plugged-in to local conditions, so that made it fun.
On the other hand, some people move here and hate it. If I were you I would look for an apartment and live in Las Vegas for a year before deciding anything. Consider a modestly priced apartment near the resorts. I would recommend looking in the area north of the Palms, from Flamingo to Spring Mountain along Arville and Wynn. That will be a fun place to live and give you a lot of local flavor in your life.

Living here is great as long as you do not have a gambling problem lol. I love this city and always have but unless you have a job lined up before you get here , I would suggest you wait till the economy comes back. If you do have a job lined up already , it is the best time to move here since you can rent or purchase a home very cheap right now. Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

There are always bartending jobs in Las Vegas, but not necessarily high paying bartending jobs. A certified bartender should be able to find something at a locals place somewhere. The city is filthy with PT's pubs, and they always seem to be looking for help.

Golden Gaming (PT's), with it's 35 local bars, currently has one job opening and that is for a cook.

I thought new people had to start as a barback and work there way up. So the existing barbacks at PTs Pub would get the bartending openings. But I am not an expert in this area.

It's going to be a huge culture shock for you. I lived in Vegas for a year coming from Los Angeles and even I had to make an adjustment.
As far as housing goes, many people have vacation homes there that have been hit by the housing crisis so finding a cheap place to rent out shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Good luck!

I haven't observed what I would consider to be cheap rents yet, but I suspect it will happen eventually. The repossessed housing inventory that we expected to hit the market hasn't materialized because the banks will be keeping them for a while. I suspect they will be wanting those properties to start generating revenue, and renting is an obvious option. Cheap rents would logically follow, but I can't say when that will happen.

Chipper , I have had many clients come here from having bartender experience get jobs , it may take some time because the good jobs are all union jobs and they must join the union and wait for their name to come up. Right now hiring is slow because of the economy though. Its funny you mention being bar back first , my son is going on 19 and has already been trained in barback position. Being a bartender during college could be a good gig for him lol.

From Rhonda:
Purchase prices are low right now due to the economy and foreclosure market , but the rental market is flying high. If you find a rental cheaper than you would believe , you need to check it out. We have a ton of rental scams going on in this city which include people knowing they are going into foreclosure and renting their properties out anyway. So they are not only getting your deposits but your monthly rent that they pocket , and unbeknown to the renter , they get a notice on the door telling them how long they have to get out. I would be very cautious renting right now in Vegas(doing your homework is a must!). We have sights you can check the property out for foreclosures on, but the trick to those are you need to check monthly because you never know what date a property will foreclose on.
If you can find anything at all in Centennial Hills for 500.00 a month , I would be very cautious of that situation.
