Move To Las Vegas
 Moving From Cali to Vegas

Hey guys I need some advice here about finding an apartment in Vegas.

My fiance and I plan on moving to Vegas this Spring. He's trying to look for work (cooking/culinary dept) which was the main reason why we're moving out there. We're staying with family there for a month or so and then off to look for an apt.

Here's my problem... he wants a gas stove, I want a washer and dryer in the apt. We really don't want to go higher then $650 and I'm only saying that because I don't know what our income will be looking like.

Heres some apts he's looked up... I would love your opinion on them:

1. Portola Del Sol - 1915 Simmons Street, Las Vegas, NV 89106

2. Horizon Crest - 13 W Owens Avenue, North Las Vegas, NV 89101

3. Hertiage Estate - 4870 Nellis Oasis Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89115

4. Karen Pines - 4450 Karen Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89121

5. Bonanza Pines l & lll - I don't even know where that is

6. Seirra Pines - 3201 South Mojave Road, Las Vegas, nv 89121

7. The Terrance -3975 North Nellis Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89115

8. La Fiesta Apts -1492 North Lamb Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89110

Any opinion would be great! If any of you lived in these places or know someone who did I'd love to know the pros and cons. I know I didn't put down what part of Vegas these places are in, but its because I don't know the area.

Or a suggestion to another place would be great.

Living in LV for 40+ yrs, I would not choose any of the locations. Most are in the NE area which is the higher crime. 13 W Owens is real bad neighborhood! I'm guessing he picked these out as they had $650 or close to? There is a reason they are cheaper than NW, SW,Green Valley.

I am not familiar with these two neighborhoods, they may be better crimewise than the others listed. 4450 Karen Avenue, 3201 South Mojave Road. You can go here to compare. http://www.lvmpd.com/crimeviewcommunity/

What street name are you living for a month or so w/ family?

Thanks Chipper, I think the street name would be Southern Highland Pkwy.

Chipper is great for getting advice on locations, He is from Vegas, so he knows the area well and I always agree with his opinions on that subject. I would take the time to do crime search etc for any area you choose.
Southern Highland is a very good area but its doubtful you will find anything for 650.00 there. I don't know if you know or not but the line of work he is trying to get in to is very competitive right now, especially if he is trying for casinos. Good luck.

I know I'll have a job lined up for me at a daycare in Vegas, so we wont be completely off the hook.

My fiance did go to school for culinary but didn't get his degree (passed mod 1and 2, didn't pass mod 3, they let him continue mod 4 and 5 then on his last day of school told him he couldn't get his degree because he didn't pass 3rd mod. I wish he had fought that)

I did run into a few apts online in Summerlin:

1. Parc West- 8440 Westcliff Drive, 89145

2. Shadow Hills- 3501 Shady Timber Street, 89129

3. Desert Shadow- 5905 W Charleston Boulevard, 89146

A bit more in the $750 or so range but I hope someone can give me an opinion on these ones... hopefully better than my other search lol and they all have gas stoves.

First one is best location; quick access to Summerlin Pkwy which gets you to the US-95.
Second also good area.
Third one, they built these as condos to sell, so good quality interiors. Then converted to apts when could not sell. This is not Summerlin. Would be good if fiance needs some classes through College of S NV next door. Not the best neighborhood, but better than your first post. : )

$750 is a more realistic minimum starting point for decent apt in decent area.

Thanks for all your help chipper it means a lot. I'd rather get advise from a local Vegan (is that what they call you guys there? lol) then to assume something is a great deal and find out I'm in tweekerville. I already deal with that here. I pay $595 but can barely afford that at the moment, and I'm working at a fast food place. My neighbors are no doubt druggies and I'm sick of hearing a concert going on at 3 am and people stealing our ashtrays lol. Scary stuff, but I'm sure nothing compared to the bad parts of Vegas. At least once I get situated at the daycare I should be making full-time hours vs. my 8 hrs a week here.

As far as classes goes we both need to find a place that does accept financial aid and offers grants (very terrified of loans, especially since starting off in a new state lol)

If I was you I would shop around for a house. A few friends ended up buying in Vegas. Most rented out the house in NW Vegas for $ 500.00 a month. When I checked the places out, I seen at least 5 others with signs out front "for-rent" in the area.
It seems investors are snapping up these the lower price houses then rent them out.

True investors are snapping up homes & renting them out, but I'd be very curious where in the NW area of LV you can rent for $500. Even in the higher crime area of the NE I think $500 is a stretch.

Yeah $500 sounds nice, but like what Chipper said it comes with a price. I'd rather try to pay a little more in a nicer neighborhood than in a bad one.

Chipper, I found a few more apts

1. La Serena- 1237 W Alexander Road, 89032 (I don't like the outside at all but they do have space, crime rate seems slim to nothing according to the crimeview)

2. Palacio Apartments -7545 Oso Blanca Road, 89149

3. Southwest Ranch- 9925 W Russell Road, 89148 (crimeview had quite a few pop ups)

4. Palermo - 5870 W Harmon Avenue, 89103

My husband and I are moving to Vegas for 2 years from Palm Springs. Thank goodness we know the heat won'tr be a problem. He lived on the strip in the early 80s and loved it. He was thinking we should move to the Las Vegas Country Club because safe but central. Is this the case? We still like to be near the action (neither of us gamble but we love the lights!) Are the HOAs killer? I am also partial to high rises and would be interested but do not want to live in a ghost town (again, that safety thing...). Any advice/feedback would be great....the more verbose the better! (We can spend up to 450K and we both work from home).

P.S. this site and your collective advice is great. Very much appreciate the time everyone puts into it.

Suzie my fiance and I are the same way. We don't gamble either (not often and if we did it would be once every blue moon and we we can spare to) but the lights are beautiful.

You work from home? that sounds like a dream job there  would be nice to have that kind of flexibility :1:

Chipper has been helpful to me as well as the people here. (Thanks guys!)

If it wasn't for this forum I prolly would of made a bad mistake on a place to live. Still deciding where and when but it'll prolly be March or April.

89149 is a great area. Remember just because crime search has a lot of pop up's it doesn't mean much.....it really depends on what it is and you should read what violences have been reported. A kids bicycle stolen is a crime, so much domestic abuse etc.......what you are looking for is gang activity, rapes, home invasions and burglaries.

Depending on what you are looking for , you can get killer deals on those high rises right now. For instance MGM Signature can be a great deal for a one bedroom. You will have to deal with HOA"S and they can be high to people not use to paying them.
I have a client right now trying to sell his contract at City Center, one bedroom on the 34th floor over looking the Bellagio Fountains. Price is listed now at 585,000 which is 30% lower than he purchased for and hes still willing to look at serious offers. It is Prime !! Just remember the HOA"s will be in all of them.

We also have some great prices on the Lofts which I love and the mid rises as well.
If you send me an email of exactly what you have in mind , I can reply back with information that might be helpful to you.

Thanks Ronda  That definitely help me narrow down how bad a location is.

Still looking around. Haven't put any stickers on any that I absolutely love yet. I was in love with the Parc West apt then realized their kitchen picture was actually part of the club house :( I was sad lol.

Another thing you could consider, is going with a private owner in a condo or town home which is what I would rather do if it were me.

I am thinking about Moving to Las Vegas from Southern California, I am looking for a good safe area and an 1 bedroom apartment around $500 dollars a month. I am also looking to get a computer tech job or a job that repairs computers, I was just curious to know what the job market in Las Vegas, I heard that the casinos are not doing so well. Any advice would be helpful.
