I am thinking about Moving to Las Vegas from Southern California, I am looking for a good safe area and an 1 bedroom apartment around $500 dollars a month. I am also looking to get a computer tech job or a job that repairs computers, I was just curious to know what the job market in Las Vegas, I heard that the casinos are not doing so well. Any advice would be helpful.
Thank You

The unemployment rate is high here but its mostly construction workers out of work. Casinos are slower than usual but haven't heard of any massive layoffs. I know MGM has been doing a lot of hiring since City Center opened. Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

I drove by Silverado Village Apartments the other day and saw a $495 banner. I used to live there. It's on Arville about a block north of Flamingo (a block north of Palms Hotel/Casino). That's a fun safe neighborhood, and a good apartment complex. It comes with free cable TV. The only thing I didn't like about it was that Cox never wired the complex so cable modem service wasn't available. I had to get DSL from the phoneco instead.
It won't be easy to fine a computer tech job, but there a lot of that kind of work available if you go into business for yourself. It wouldn't be too difficult to promote a computer repair service and work out of your home & do house calls. This recession is in the hands of creative entrepreneurs.

I have lived in LV 40+ yrs and no way I'd pick this location. It is not realistic to live in a nice complex for $500/mth. By nice I mean clean, safe, minimal bugs, grocery stores etc nearby.

I left Silverado Village about 3 1/2 years ago. I was there on a 1 year lease. I relocated because my lease was up and I bought some acreage in northern Nevada.

I never had any theft problems, and I don't recall any neighbors speaking of having theft problems.

The cable was satisfactory in my apartment and included some premium channels. I can't say if there were problems in any other areas of the complex, but I never heard of it.

The complex was managed by ConAm when I lived there. The ConAm web site indicates that it still is. Silverado Village was the thrid complex I' lived in that was managed by ConAm. There are differences in management from one complex to another, but that's usually budgetary. Honestly, I can't imagine them putting up with racism. They treated me fairly.

No bug problems when I lived there.
The reason I say that life is good is that it's so close to the Palms, the Gold Coast, and the Rio. That puts you very close to the center of the strip. If you enjoy that lifestyle, it's a good location.
There are also two pool areas at Silverado Village. As I recall they didn't heat the pool so swimming season was short, but they kept them clean. I lived in the south end of the complex, so we had our own pool.
I did most of my grocery shopping at Von's on Sahara & Decatur, but I occasionally shopped at the Albertson's in Spring Mountain & Decatur (it's closed now). There's also a Food4Less near Flamingo & Decatur, if you don't mind bagging your own groceries.
I previously lived in an apartment on the east side of Las Vegas Blvd. I was on Sands. I was so close to Wynns that the complex I lived in is now the employee parking lot for Wynns. While the particular complex I lived in was exceptional, the nearby area along Twain is lined with apartments and getting pretty run-down. There are a lot of casino workers who live there, but it's still much more of an area of concern than the area around Silverado Village.
Unless things have changed radically since I lived there, I would rather believe that someone was posting just to be obtuse.

Good grief! Section 7 east of Decatur and the west portion of Section 1 is the Strip area, as well as the UNLV area. That's the fun part of town.
There are some terrific properties on the west side of Section 1. I know people who live in the Meridian apartments, located near Koval & Flamingo. That's a great place to live, if you don't mind paying premium rent.

Yes, I would not suggest living near UNLV and the Strip. You definition of "fun" does not match my definition of "safe."
But the original poster does not say what kinda neighborhood they live in now. Maybe the areas you suggest would be a step up?!

That's true. He isn't going to find an apartment at the Meridian for anywhere near $500/month.
Yes, I would not suggest living near UNLV and the Strip. You definition of "fun" does not match my definition of "safe."
I found the best quality of life I've had anywhere in my life at Sunrise Village, the complex that used to be close to Wynns. It was like living a perpetual vacation. If Sunrise Village was still there, I'd still be there. I had no concerns at all about safety when I lived there.
Admittedly, quality of life wasn't as good at Silverado Village as it was at Sunrise Village, but that had nothing to do with the quality of the apartments themselves. The difference was in how close the residents were socially at Sunrise Village.
Honestly, I find your suggestion that the resort areas are unsafe to be a very odd assertion. That's simply not the case.

What is the minimum wage in Vegas? I was hearing that on the west side of Vegas is a safe area to live? I do not know if that is true are not? Is the job market still pretty rough in Vegas, are people getting jobs?
Is there any nice apartments $300 dollars a month?

Not sure about minimum wage, since I work for myself.
The west side of town is a premium part of town, and I'm sure that the crime numbers are attractive, but it's a little far out for me. I have friends who live out there and I'm always astounded at how much of the day is eaten-up with driving when I go there for a visit.
There are some casinos out there but I'm not crazy about them. I've been to Rampart & Red Rock, but the food is expensive and gambling conditions are poor at both properties.
I suspect that you'll find that $300 won't get you an apartment in any part of town. They seem to start at closer to $500.

If you are being offered benefits , min wage is no less than 6.55 per hour and if you are not being offered the benefits it is no less than 7.55 per hour.
The west side of town is a great place to live, I'm not sure what the above poster means about how much of his day is eaten up driving herel. You can basically get anywhere in Las Vegas in 30 to 40 minutes unless there is a bad accident or something. I drive from one end of the valley to the other all the time.I don't gamble so I don't know what to say about that but I will say Red Rock is one of the nicest local casinos in Vegas.
If you could find a place for 300.00 a month , I can guarantee you will not like living in it, its almost as bad with anything around 500. You really need to be up in the 700 to 800"s.

Well like I said I do not gamble so I cant say anything about that but I do eat out a lot and I really didn't find it to be anymore expensive than Sante Fe which is closer to me. I also think it is beautiful inside. I didn't think the room rates were bad. I love Cherry and how you can listen to the club bands by the pool. What someone likes in a casino is just an opinion and really shouldn't even be brought up to someone thinking of moving here, it doesn't hold much value since it is opinionated.

I would also like to reply to this. You can not compare apartments or condos close to the strip to resorts. Anything that is good anywhere near the strip is in highly guarded complexes even including the Meridian.Even with me being a Realtor , I go through a lot just to get in to show the condos, so someone else wont even get in there, unless they know who they are going to see.
Living on the strip is just not comparable to living near the strip even if its with in walking distance. Chipper like me has lived here all of our lives and we know what the difference is. Strip property is gold. Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

Some impressions of a hotel property are opinions, others are factual. For example, the room rates aren't really open for debate, since room rates are what they are.
In the 2 week period starting Monday February 7, the lowest nightly rate I see is $110, with a high of $260. The calculated average daily room rate for that time period is $158. Click on the following link to see a rate quote for 2 adults in that time frame, which I just submitted at the Red Rock web site.
http://windowrock.com/redrock.jpg
Then ON TOP of the room rate Red Rock will assess a $24.99/night "Resort Amenity Fee", making the effective average nightly rate closer to $183/night, before taxes of course. And let's bear in mind that the hotel is still way out on the western edge of town.
In today's Las Vegas hotel market that's anything but reasonable. In fact it's awful. You can stay at a lot of Strip properties for $30 to $40 per night right now. The only way you're going to pay higher than Red Rock in Las Vegas is to stay at some of the 5-star properties on the Strip, but at $183/night average nightly rate even the 5-star properties will be competitive.
Is it any wonder that Station Casinos is in receivership?

What is expensive to one person may not be to another but if someone is going to live here more than likely they wouldn't need the rooms. I only did because after partying at the club , I didn't want to drive home. If I had lived close to the casino , I would of just called a cab. By the way I payed 65.00 for my room , not sure about todays prices and its irrelevant. Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

There are inexpensive ways to promote that sort of thing. Ads here and there, maybe even on Craigs List. Ads on posting boards at supermarkets. Leaving business cards at barber shops. You'll think of some way to promote yourself without spending a fortune.
Remember that each customer is an opportunity to make a friend. They know that their alternative is to get fleeced by the Geek Squad, so always remind them of that. Leave a few cards. They'll tell their friends.
Good luck!

Vegas really isnt that bad. I moved out here from LA because the rent was SO MUCH cheaper. Maybe not for $500 but for $1000 a month you can live in a really nice place. I live off strip to the west a little bit. I dont know about you guys, but the people arent all that bad. If i can help, i used this Las Vegas moving company to move my stuff out here. Actually was able to get some advice on where to move that is the cheapest/safest in the area. If your still confused, ask your movers or someone that knows the area. Hope i helped!

Per a local TV newscast, the avg rent in LV dropped 8.2% from the third QTR 2009 of $837 to $768 in December 2009. This was a drop of 12.5% from Dec 2008.
They said lots of apts are offering deals for move in like free rent for a month or free gifts. Obviously lots of competition from all the investors renting out their newly acquired homes.

I wonder how the job market is in Vegas right now? I am still thinking about starting a computer repair Business in Las Vegas, that is if things are getting better in Vegas?

The conventional job market is still very bad, but life goes on for those of us who work for ourselves. You should be able to scrape out a living repairing computers in Las Vegas, at least as well as anywhere else.

Update from my earlier post about cheap rent in Vegas. I have 4 friends who own homes in Las Vegas. All are 2~3 years ways from retirement and purchased homes while the Can $ is high and prices remain low. Until they are ready to spend the winters in Vegas all have rented out there homes on one year contracts under $ 500 a month, just enough to cover cost and wear and tear, taxes, insurance, HOA.....
Now for the strange, two have had renters skip out on rental payments and ended up evicting them.
All used a realitor agent who claim they have pre-screened the tentants with good credit scores and secure jobs. Lucky they left the places in good working order, no real hard damage. Legal action is ongoing against the realitor, not going in to details
All four homes are currently rented with one year lease. For some reason a renter skips or gets evicted I will post on this site if allowed information how to contact the owner.
Please dont PM or email me asking for addresses or put there names on a list or my favorite, a long sob story about starting life over and need a break.

Im a little confused about this post. If the Realtor is not licensed to do property management then he/she can get into some big trouble. But if they used a Realtor to just find them a tenant , the Realtor will not be held responsible for anything after that because they are not a property manager. Not sure what you mean in the last part of your post too.......maybe call me or email me sometime. I hope things are going well for you. Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI

The realitor claimed she was licensed to do property management and was not. The tentant she claimed were pre-screened were not. In fact the one tentant was arrested for fraud passing bad rent checks and un-employed at the time.
The pre-screen report said the tentant was currently employed with reference letter from the previous landlord
Well the previous landlord was Clark County dentention and the employment was passing bad checks.
The ex tentant is on bail living in a condo in the Green Valley Ranch district.
The realitor has since vacated Las Vegas and now lives in Texas.
As for the last part of the post, I was trying to say if you were interested in renting one of these properties in the future, please don't contact me directly. When one of the homes was listed for rent on Craiglist. The owner must of got 100 emails of hardship and sob stories, one guy asked if he could have his pony live in one of the bedrooms, nice!!!

Oh ok, I understand now. If she claimed to be a property manager and she wasnt she would be in trouble, but someone would have to prove she claimed that , the only way I know of is if its in writing or she accepted rent from the tenants and passed on to the landlord. Either way , it will probably be a civil suit if she hung her license up and moved out of state.
Honestly I am not sure about anyone taking a chance renting a house out to anyone at all for 500.00 a month. I can only imagine the people they would be screening. I mean seriously you cant even rent a one bed room condo for that price in a decent neighborhood so Im not sure why anyone would do that. I have investment properties too but I will only rent out to people I trust and I would not cut the price so low to attract the wrong kind of tenants. Just my thoughts.
Well I hope it ends up well for them. You should of referred them to me :12: Rhonda Brinkerhoff ABR,CRS,GRI
